CRYOGENIC AND SPACE SIMULATION SYSTEMS

GERALD ROY SPENCER, P.E. IS THE ENGINEER OF RECORD FOR THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS:

ULTRA-HIGH VACUUM TEST FACILITY - BUILDING 33 - This project was a test facility to house non-man rated altitude chambers D, E, plus several other smaller chambers.  Gerald R. Spencer was the Engineer of Record (EOR) for the design and the construction of the Cryogenic systems that served the various test chambers.  This included the LIN circulation systems, Cryropumping systems, solar simulation, LIN Storage Tank Farm, LIN distribution piping, and the LOX system.  Mr. Spencer was in the employ of Bernard Johnson Engineers at the time of this assignment.

HIGH PRESSURE CRYOGENIC PUMPING SYSTEM - PROJECT 72-1034 - This Project involved the design and the construction of modifications to the Cryo-pumping systems at Chamber A and Chamber B at JSC.  This included modifications to the Helium refrigeration system.  We were employed directly by NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas.  Joe Fulton at JSC was the project manager.- This project involved the modification of the LIN heat to the existing LIN Tank farm and LIN pumping to the Helium Refrigeration System and the LIN Heat Shields.  Gerald R. Spencer, P.E. was Contracted directly by NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas for this project.  Joe Fulton at NASA-JSC was the project manager.

RADIANT HEATING TEST EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION - PROJECT 72-2029 - BUILDING 260 - This project involved the design and the construction of the installation of 10MW of artificial solar radiant heating equipment for a solar radiation simulation test facility.  We also design and the construction ed the installation of the Ignitron system to power the solar simulation equipment.  We also design and the construction ed the installation of a space chamber in which the solar simulation tests were performed.  We also design and the construction ed the Space Chamber which was actually a modification of a surplus altitude chamber that was installed at the Rocketdyne engine test facility in Reno, Nevada.  Gerald R. Spencer, P.E. was contracted directly by NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas for this project.  Joe Fulton at NASA-JSC was the project manager.

RADIANT HEATING TEST EQUIPMENT SUBSTATION AND INSTALLATION - PROJECT E-101 - BUILDING 260 - This project involved the design and the construction of the installation of a new 5MW sub station that powers a solar radiation simulation test facility.  This project also included the heat shield cooling system for the test vessel, which was water cooled in lieu of cryogenic system.  Jim Willis at NASA-JSC was the project manager.

FLASH EVAPORATOR TESTING BUILDING NO. 7 - This project involved the design and the construction of a vacuum vessel as required to test the cooling effect of waste water evaporation in space as required for equipment cooling.  We were employed directly by NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas for this project.  John Welch at NASA-JSC was the project manager.

MANWAY FOR ACCESS TO MAN RATED CHAMBER VACUUM PIPING SYSTEM - PROJECT 72-2075 -  This Project involved the design and the construction of modifications to provide access to the rough vacuum piping that serves Chamber A and Chamber B at NASA-JSC.  Gerald R. Spencer, P.E. was contracted directly by NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas for this project.  Bill Metcalf at NASA-JSC was the project manager.

LIN CRYOGENIC PUMPING SYSTEM MODIFICATIONS - PROJECT 72-2073 - This Project involved the design and the construction of  modifications to the Cryo-pumping systems at Chamber D and Chamber E in building 33 at NASA-JSC.  Gerald R. Spencer, P.E. was contracted directly by NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas for this project.  Joe Fulton at NASA-JSC was the project manager.

SOLAR SIMULATOR COOLING SYSTEM MODIFICATIONS - PROJECT 72-2029 - This Project involved the design and the construction of  modifications to the Solar Simulator cooling systems at Chamber A and Chamber B at NASA-JSC.  Gerald R. Spencer, P.E. was contracted directly by NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas.  Gene Burton at NASA-JSC was the project manager.

MODIFICATIONS TO LIN CIRCULATION SYSTEM AND CHAMBER A & B MODIFICATION - PROJECT 72-1011 - This project involved the design and the construction of the addition of LIN Tank storage to the existing LIN Tank farm and LIN pumping to the Helium Refrigeration System and the LIN Heat Shields.  Gerald R. Spencer, P.E. was contracted directly by NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas.  Joe Fulton at NASA-JSC was the project manager.

MODIFICATION TO LIN HEAT SHIELDS, CHAMBER E  PROJECT 72-1012  - This project involved the design and the construction of modifications to the Building 33 Chamber E internal cryogenic heat sink to prevent cracks in the chevron parts at the headers.  Gerald R. Spencer, P.E. was contracted directly by NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas.  Joe Fulton at NASA-JSC was the project manager.

NASA-JSC - BLDG 7 MODIFICATIONS FOR EXTERNAL VEHICULAR ACTIVITY FACILITY - $1,100,000 - his project required the design and the construction of modifications and additions to existing Vacuum Vessel as required for development of space hardware and space suits for the space laboratory project.  Gerald R. Spencer, P.E. was contracted directly by NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas.  Joe Fulton at NASA-JSC was the project manager.

SPACE SIMULATION SYSTEMS:  Gerald Spencer, PE is has designed many modifications and system up-grades to the original space simulation systems control, space simulation systems monitoring, cryogenic systems control, solar simulation systems control, helium refrigeration systems control, and cryo-pumping systems control systems for the large space simulation chambers A (the largest in the world) & B over the past 35 years.   This includes a Data Acquisition Systems for building 32 that includes a 16,000 Point (24,000 point capacity) Distributed Control System (DCS) for the chamber operations at Building 32, NASA Johnson Space Center.  This is a stand-alone info-highway for test data acquisition, test data logging, space simulation systems control, space simulation systems monitoring, cryogenic systems control, solar simulation systems control, helium refrigeration systems control, and cryo-pumping systems control.
